Slow Walking
Most of us live in a fast paced world where information exchanges and moves at phenomenal speeds across various media. And where the pervasive modern attitude is "everything needs to be done yesterday".
I noticed some years ago that even when I was not in a rush to get to an appointment or meet an important deadline, that I adopted the above mentality on a day-to-day basis in all aspects of my life. Even on my days off from work, I was still engaged in the "rat-race"!
To counter this, I now adopt a "slow walking" (also applies to driving) policy usually a few times a month where I will take my time during the day (usually on the weekend). On these occasions, I will happily "mosey" through the day, going about my activities but with a more relaxed and engaged mindset. By being firmly in the moment and not always looking to the future to plan the next move, I find peace.
Try it yourself. Simply start walking more slowly than you normally would. When you first do this, you will likely meet inner resistance as you have conditioned yourself to always be on the move both physically and figuratively. But by controlling your walking pace to a more sedate level, you will find that your mind naturally slows down and becomes more focused on the moment — the eye of the storm. From this perspective, you will also realize just how fast-paced the modern world has become. You'll see evidence of this all around you as people rush about their business. And if you do it with a smile on your face, you will notice how others also unconsciously start to slow down as well (especially if you are in their way lol). It is a very relaxing experience and if you are in a busy location, it will make you feel as if you have stepped outside of the "mainstream" to observe a little.
It is also beneficial to speak a little slowly (not too much so you are unintelligible or sound idiotic) and really consider your words when opting to have a "slow walking" day. This is good for me because where I come from, we speak very fast.
So make this a frequent habit. Let go of the need for speed and impatience, and walk a little like our ancestors did; within the moment.
